When in Lagos
Fela's spirit is with you no matter where you are, but you're making the trip all the way to Lagos State, Nigeria. When you're not throwing down at the New Afrika Shrine, make an effort to get out and explore what Ikeja has to offer. A good place to start is Fela's home, now called the Kalakuta Museum. His clothing, saxophone, old photographs and other household items are on display throughout the museum. It's topped off with regular rooftop parties to ensure you're never too far from the action.
Getting There
Given Felabration's worldwide popularity, there are a multitude of options to get to Ikeja. Murtala Muhammed International Airport is the main airport in Lagos State, connecting flights from major cities all over the world. Once you've landed, your best bet is a local taxi or car hire service. You can even rent a car, but learning foreign traffic laws isn't practical in this situation. A leisurely stroll is also a possibility if you choose to stay at one of the many budget-friendly hotels near the New Afrika Shrine.
Lodging
As previously mentioned, there are many hotels close to the festivities. Whether you're on a budget or all about the spend-happy lifestyle, Ikeja's got you covered. It's recommended you pick a hotel that offers free internet access and car hire service. Internet access is crucial if you plan to document every waking second of the festival online.
The Equator
You'll be pretty darn close to the equator. October is far from being the hottest month of the year, but you're still in a tropical climate. The less clothing you wear, the better.
The New Afrika Shrine
It's seen the likes of Bono and Mos Def, so it's already earned some cool points. It's also a place where you can kick back and chill with some tasty takeout food. Finally, the Heart of Afrobeat excludes nobody. Regardless of who you are, what you believe and where you stand in society, you are welcome.
