Visit the monastery
Spend Losar’s first day at Boudhanath Stupa; if you get there in the early morning—don’t forget to bring offerings—you can receive blessings for the upcoming year.
Try guthuk
This traditional noodle soup is eaten on the last day of the last month of the lunar calendar—New Year’s Eve, that is. Made with meat, cheese, radish, and noodles, guthuk also contains dumpling-like dough balls that are either fortuitous or foreboding, depending on whatever’s been baked inside.
Stay up after dark
When the sun goes down, watch as dancers twirl lit torches to drive away evil. It’s a performance memorable enough that in-the-know Losar attendees arrive before dawn to nab a good viewing spot. There’s also a nighttime fireworks show that you won’t want to miss.
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM)
Boudhanath is three miles outside Kathmandu proper, and taxis are readily available to transport you between the town and the city.
