Storm the castle
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fassil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure). At 70,000 square meters, it’s no wonder that this commanding medieval structure helped Gondar earn the nickname “Africa’s Camelot.”
Timkat to go
While Gondar arguably throws the most impressive Timkat celebration, festivities in Addis Ababa are also a beautiful celebration of this reverent holiday, and a bit more accessible to tourists.
Watch and learn
Don’t miss the faithful celebrants immersing themselves in the water, but it’s probably best to fight off the urge to take a swim. This is a holiday of great reverence, and it’s better to be a respectful observer rather than an unwelcomed participant.
Getting There
If you are coming from Addis Ababa, consider flying to Gondar, as buses take two days.
Lodging and Getting Around
It’s worth booking a tour to ensure your safety and comfort, as well as a hotel room, which can be tricky during the festival. Hiring a guide is also advised, not only for ease of travel but to translate the ceremony.
