Each year a brass band comprised of Wacken's volunteer firefighters kicks off the festival. Metalheads go crazy for the oom-pah'ing tradition.
Drink with locals
Many Wacken villagers set up makeshift bars in their front yard, an excellent way to immerse in the culture.
Get a campsite
They may be a noisy, muddy, beer-strewn mess, but the festival's campgrounds are awesome for fun and convenience.

It's worth the small entrance fee to check out the vast array of CDs, vinyl, T-shirts and spiky gear. Workshops and fashion shows are also part of the package.
